Student Support Centre — Tucano, Amapá
Schooling in rural areas and indigenous territories in the state of Amapá, Brazil, is organised in modules. Students attend teaching units of four weeks per school year. Their contact with school is therefore limited to the periods during which these teaching modules take place. For the rest of the year, students are on their own in their learning process. One advantage of this model is that it interferes little with the traditional calendar governing planting, harvesting, hunting and fishing. However, students go through long periods without anyone to support them in their studies. Young indigenous students and students from adjacent rural communities are left to themselves and face significant learning difficulties. This problem is especially pronounced at final exam time or when writing dissertations, partly due to the great distances between students and their supervising teachers.
Feigenhain co-funded the construction of an educational support centre for indigenous and rural students in the region. The centre is located on a three-hectare plot in Tucano (1.098N, 52.403W), in the state of Amapá, Brazil, a rural community adjacent to the indigenous territory. It has a classroom, a small library, satellite internet access, a kitchen, a bathroom, and accommodation for volunteer teachers and students. The bus connecting the Macapá–Tucano route allows volunteer teachers to reach the centre easily.
The centre is now built and operational. Thank you to all our donors for making this project possible.
Support for the APIWATA NGO
Feigenhain provided one-time support to the association of indigenous peoples of the Triângulo do Amapari (APIWATA), one of the associations created by the Amerindians of Amapá, Brazil. APIWATA works primarily in logistical support for health and education, as well as in purchasing medicines for indigenous communities in the region. This campaign is now closed.
